Chris Carter Comments on the Possibility of ‘The X-Files’ Without Scully

Gillian Anderson made it clear when she agreed to return for one more season of The X-Files—the one which premiered last night on Fox—that this would be her last assignment as Dana Scully. This left fans wondering if this ten episode 11th season of the series would truly be its last. I mean, the show did go on without Mulder for a year and a half, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that the show might continue on past Anderson’s departure.

Not so, says series creator Chris Carter, who divulged during a recent AMA on Reddit that he has never thought of the series continuing without Scully. But his last sentence is very intriguing…

For me, the show has always been Mulder & Scully. So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider.

Was her character given a proper goodbye? I think you will want to sit down and watch the series finale very carefully.

First things first, the show was Doggett and Scully for nearly two seasons, so let’s not get crazy. However, the thing that caught the most attention is that he calls the tenth episode of the upcoming season 11 “the series finale.” Not season finale, but rather “series finale.” It makes it sound much more definitive than most of us had considered.

I mean, to be honest, I don’t think anyone wants the show to continue without Scully. Sure, there’s precedent for the show to continue without one of its leads, but I can’t think of a soul who enjoys seasons eight and nine outside of Robert Patrick’s immediate family. I say, let the show die with Scully… presuming that’s what happens in the finale.
